Breaking Ground Magazine Art

VSA Tennessee is honored to work with the Council on Developmental Disabilities in finding art for their magazine, Breaking Ground. If you are interested in having your art considered for publication for this magazine, please send the following to VSA Tennessee at userk7706@comcast.net: 1) A short bio, 2) High resolution electronic image of your art, 3) Your contact information.

VSA Tennessee will contact you to let you know if your art has been selected to send on to the magazine. It will then be up to the magazine if and/or when the art will be used. You will be contacted if your art is used.

There are particular themes that are being requested for the art. Themes include: Multi-Cultural communities, Housing/Homes, Courthouses, Anything related to Washington DC, Anything related to books or reading, State Parks.

Vibrations of Laughter

On Tuesday, September 28, 2010 (Murfreesboro TN) world renown actress, Estelle Condra, will perform her 60 minute one woman drama, Vibrations of Laughter, which is the story of Annie Sullivan before she became Helen Keller’s teacher. The performance will take place at 9:40 am in the Tucker Theater on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. The program is free and open to the public.

Most people know the story of Helen Keller, few know the story of Annie Sullivan before she became Helen's teacher.

In 1868 there were no orphanages in Boston and the children were dropped off like so much baggage at Tewksbury, an asylum/poor house. The entry in the Superintendent’s log at Tewksbury stated “Annie Sullivan age 7 – blind. Jimmy Sullivan age 4 crippled due to an infected hip.” Here begins the remarkable story of the teacher of all teachers.

In this dramatic work Estelle shares insights into the life of this remarkable woman through four different characters:
• Ms. Megan Briggs, at the Tewksbury asylum Boston 1868
• Isabella Braddy, a student at the Perkins Institute for the Deaf and the Blind in Boston 1875
• Olivia Anagnos, wife of the principal at the Perkins Institute for the deaf and the blind Boston. 1882
• Annie Sullivan, in the garden house of the Keller home in Tuscumbia Alabama 1882

Ms. Condra states, “I'm honored to share this important story through my one-woman drama for the advent of disability awareness month. I’m totally blind and have the privilege as an actress who is blind, to celebrate and remember the lives of two inspiring women who overcame serious impediments.”

Performance for Special Education Students

YOU ARE INVITED

VSA AT THE CREATIVE DISCOVERY MUSEUM

Who is Invited: Special education classes and/or families with children with
disabilities.

When: Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010

Time: The program will be from 11am-12:15. You are welcome to explore the museum
after the program.

Where: Creative Discovery Museum, 321 Chestnut St, Chattanooga TN 37402, 423-

What: For the past 6 years, VSA Tennessee has offered annual performances in which
people with disabilities perform for students with disabilities in
cultural settings. This performance will feature a percussion performance,
an opera singer, a keyboard performer and a blues band. After the
performance there will be an opportunity for your students to participate in
hands on activities in percussion, stringed instruments or visual arts. Or
you may skip the hands-on portion and go directly to enjoying the museum.

Cost: This program is open to the first 100 respondents free of charge. The hands-on
activities will also have a cap for how many participants and they will be
filled on a first come first serve basis.
